Poland pegged back by Ecuador

Ecuador 2-2 Poland
Christian Benítez struck 12 minutes from time as Ecuador denied Poland their first win in eight games in a friendly in Montreal, Canada.

Two goals in nine minutes midway through the second half from Euzebiusz Smolarek and Ludovic Obraniak had swung the match in Poland's favour after Benítez's opener on 32 minutes. The Birmingham City FC striker was not done, however, heading in to make it 2-2 and leave Franciszek Smuda's side without a win since March.

"I am glad we scored twice, but very angry that we conceded two stupid goals," said Smuda, whose team drew 2-2 with the United States on Saturday. "It is good that we did not lose the games, but we still have a lot to do. I am happy about Ludovic Obraniak, though. In two games he had three assists and one goal and he is not at his peak – he can give the team much more."

There were positive signs early on as Hubert Wołąkiewicz rattled the crossbar but Ecuador were always a threat going forward. Joffre Guerrón's header was chalked off for offside but there was no reprieve when Przemysław Tytoń could only parry Christian Noboa's shot as far as Benítez, who fired in.

Smolarek went close with a header before half-time and just after the hour he equalised after Ecuador failed to react to Obraniak's clever free-kick. Provider turned scorer when Obraniak rifled in but Benítez had the last word, denying Poland on a day where captain Michał Żewłakow earned his 101st cap, surpassing Grzegorz Lato's record.
