Romulo tells Dynamo to seize their moment

FC Dynamo may have lost four out of five finals but victory is the only thought in defender Romulo's mind as the semi-final man of the match senses glory in Azerbaijan.

After two successive final defeats in the UEFA Futsal Cup, FC Dynamo's moment has arrived. That is the view of the Russian club's Brazilian defender Romulo ahead of Saturday's showpiece match against FC Barcelona.

Dynamo have already benefited from Romulo's positive thinking at this tournament given the 27-year-old created both their goals during Thursday's 2-1 semi-final victory over title holders Kairat Almaty to scoop the man-of-the-match prize. Now, having finished a runner-up against Barcelona two seasons ago and then against Kairat last term, he is determined to bring his affirmative approach to bear on the biggest occasion of all.

"We are going to try and win this one and finally lift the title," said the Fortaleza-born player. "It was very tight against Barcelona in 2012. They are a good team and it's hard to get the ball off them. But we have our own qualities, we are confident and we have to believe we can overcome Barça."

However Romulo, whose assisted Nando's close-range finish and subsequently, with a free-kick, Fernandinho's 38th-minute clincher versus Kairat, refuses to even consider revenge as a motive at Baku's Sarhadchi Olympic Sport Complex. "Some people might want to talk about vengeance but I don't agree," he said. "This is another final, another moment. I'm only thinking about winning."

Where his focus may waver slightly is regarding the question of Dynamo's overall record in UEFA Futsal Cup finals. Though they are contesting the fixture for an unprecedented sixth time, they have lost four out of five – the anomaly being their 2007 triumph over Interviú Madrid. "It's a tough one," he said. "We have lost four finals and maybe in a way that hangs over the club and is a bit disheartening. But you have to concentrate on winning this one. We're playing well and gave a great performance yesterday. We simply have to win tomorrow – that has to be the only thought in our heads."

Accordingly, the former CAD Guarapuava ace is quick to talk up Dynamo's own glorious tradition: in four years in Moscow he has landed three Russian championships and two cups – the latest coming two weeks ago at Ugra Yugorsk's expense. "We do have a winning mentality – because Dinamo always have a great side. We need to be positive if we are to beat another great team like Barcelona.

"I was happy with the Kairat match," the No3 continued. "Now we have to improve still further in what's going to be a great final and a really tough game. We need to play to our limit but we have the necessary quality, with top Russian and Brazilian players, to succeed."

Citing the recent addition of compatriot Paulinho as a further step towards final redemption here in Azerbaijan, Romulo clearly senses victory. "We came here to get past Kairat and then collect the trophy. After two losses, we have a real chance of glory. This is our moment to celebrate and to enjoy the successes we've had along the way."
