Nottingham Forest mourn European Cup winner Lloyd

Lloyd, who has died at the age of 75, was a key figure in Brian Clough’s historic Forest side who won the old English First Division in 1978, followed by back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980. Capped four times by England, the centre-back had previously been a league champion and UEFA Cup winner with Liverpool.

In a statement, Forest said of their former defender: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Larry Lloyd.

"Part of the Miracle Men, Larry was an integral player in the Forest side that memorably won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980, making 218 appearances for the club in total.

"We send our condolences to Larry’s friends and family at this truly sad time."

Lloyd began his career with Bristol Rovers before joining Liverpool in 1969. His five years at Anfield included an important role in Liverpool’s first European trophy success as he scored the third goal in the 3-0 first-leg win over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1973 UEFA Cup final – which they eventually won 3-2 on aggregate.

After leaving Liverpool in 1974, Lloyd spent two seasons with Coventry City before joining Forest, then in the second tier of English football.

Across five years at the City Ground, Lloyd made 218 appearances and, together with central defensive partner Kenny Burns, helped Forest shut out their opponents in the 1-0 European Cup final victories over Malmö and Hamburg, in 1979 and 1980 respectively. That golden period also included League Cup final successes against Liverpool and Southampton in 1978 and 1979.

After leaving Forest, Lloyd had a spell as player-manager at Wigan Athletic before returning to the banks of the Trent to manage Notts County from 1983-84.
