UEFA appeal against Keane verdict

UEFA has appealed against its disciplinary body's decision to hand Roy Keane a one-match ban.

An appeal has been lodged by UEFA, in accordance with its disciplinary regulations, against the one-match ban given to Manchester United FC captain Roy Keane for his dismissal in last month’s UEFA Champions League first knock-out round first leg against FC Porto.

UEFA’s power of appeal
Under Article 50 of the UEFA disciplinary regulations, UEFA has the power of appeal against verdicts taken by its disciplinary authorities. In the initial proceedings, Keane was found guilty of improper conduct, which carries a one-match suspension. However, UEFA is asking for the act to be considered as assault, which would mean a ban of at least three matches.

Missing tonight
The one-match ban was announced by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body last Friday, and means that Keane misses tonight’s return leg against the Portuguese champions.

Challenge on goalkeeper
Keane was dismissed in the closing stages of the first game, which Porto won 2-1 in Portugal, following a challenge on opposition goalkeeper Vítor Baía. The Irish midfielder caught the keeper with his foot as he jumped over him.

Appeal hearing
The appeal hearing is likely to take place on the afternoon of Friday 19 March.
