Seranaj scores as Albania women make their debut

Aurora Seranaj had the honour of scoring the first goal for the Albanian women's national team as they marked their debut with a 1-0 friendly win against the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

History was made in Albania on Wednesday as the women's national team played their first official game, beating neighbours the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia 1-0.

A crowd of 2,000 gathered on Veteran's Day in Pogradec to see Albania's women make their friendly debut, with lone striker Ana Baro – her nation's female player of the year – impressing, peppering the opposition goal with shots in the early stages. However, the honour of scoring Albania's first international goal was to go to Aurora Seranaj, who found the target after a corner kick on 30 minutes.

"My adrenaline was up hours before the kick-off," said the 28-year-old Seranaj. "I was very excited and I am glad I scored the winning goal. It's a great day for me and for women's football in Albania." Baro, 18, added: "It's a dream come true to play for your country. We played well and deserved to win. I'd have loved to have scored, but what is important is what happened on the pitch today."
