• Born in Nakhchivan, Rovnag Abdullayev studied civil engineering in Moscow and worked his way up to become a major figure in Azerbaijan's oil industry; he has been head of the state oil company since 2005.
• President of top Baku club PFK Neftçi since 2004, he oversaw successes in the league and the Commonwealth Cup – the competition that brings together champions of the former Soviet Republics – before being elected president of the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) on 14 March 2008. He was re-elected unanimously for a second term in March 2012.
• Committed to development from the bottom up, Abdullayev said: "One of our missions is to make the game even more popular. We have a strategy for the future of the national team, but we know that to develop the national team, we must start at the grassroots. We have to increase the standard of education and improve infrastructure. We know our goals, and we have a vision for the future."
