Neman own goals gift Gomel the Belarusian Cup

Two own goals late in the second half were the difference as FC Gomel beat FC Neman Grodno 2-0 to lift the Belarusian Cup and secure a place in next season's UEFA Europa League.

Two late own goals helped newly-promoted FC Gomel beat FC Neman Grodno 2-0 in the Belarusian Cup final and seal a place in next season's UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.

With neither side able to break the deadlock in a tight first half, the game had to wait until the 87th minute for a breakthrough. Neman defender Pavel Rybak turned into his own net from Igor Stasevich's cross before Aleksandr Kovalenko's headed own goal three minutes later secured the win for Gomel, whose previous cup triumph was in 2002.

Stasevich was a handful for the Neman defence, switching wings throughout the first half and testing the reflexes of Sergei Chernik on more than one occasion. Neman had a chance of their own through Vadim Demidovich but Vladimir Bushma's smart save meant it remained goalless at the break.

The game was seemingly headed for extra time when Stasevich's cross was put past his own keeper by Rybak. Gomel made sure of the trophy when Kovalenko headed into his own net with seconds remaining.

"First of all I want to congratulate our team and our fans," said Gomel coach Oleg Kubarev, whose side currently lie sixth in the summer Belarusian Premier League. "It is a landmark win and with so many games behind us, emotions are running high."

Neman coach Petr Kachuro added: "That was a real cup game before the first goal. We have to admit that Gomel were a bit fresher as they rested some key players during the last league round."
