Everton go fourth, Tottenham triumph

Ross Barkley's late free-kick handed Everton FC a 2-1 victory at Swansea City AFC that lifted the Toffees up to fourth in the Premier League, after Tottenham Hotspur FC had also won.

Ross Barkley's late free-kick secured Everton FC a 2-1 victory at Swansea City AFC that lifted the visitors up to fourth in the Premier League, after Tottenham Hotspur FC had prevailed 3-2 at Southampton FC.

Seamus Coleman handed Everton the lead in south Wales courtesy of a thunderous strike from outside the area on 66 minutes, but the Toffees were pegged back just moments later when Bryan Oviedo diverted a Dwight Tiendalli effort beyond Tim Howard. Roberto Martínez's troops had the final say, however, Barkley curling a right-footed free-kick under the crossbar with six minutes remaining.

That goal catapulted Everton a point ahead of Chelsea FC – who visit third-placed Arsenal FC on Monday – and within two points of Liverpool FC at the summit. Tottenham lie seventh, meanwhile, after interim manager Tim Sherwood claimed his first success since taking over from André Villas-Boas.

Adam Lallana put Southampton in front with 13 minutes gone, but Emmanuel Adebayor capped a fine break with an acrobatic equaliser, before a Jos Hooiveld own goal gifted Spurs the lead. Rickie Lambert levelled for the hosts close to the hour mark, yet Adebayor quickly buried a left-footed effort to settle an entertaining contest.
