Arsenal finish year top of Premier League pile

Arsenal FC head into the new year top of the Premier League following a 1-0 victory at Newcastle United FC, on a day when Chelsea FC came from behind to beat Liverpool FC.

Arsenal FC won 1-0 at Newcastle United FC to return to the top of the Premier League table.

Knocked off the summit by Manchester City FC on Saturday, the Gunners will head into 2014 with a one-point lead thanks to Olivier Giroud's deft second-half header in north-east England. The France striker's goal, coming via Theo Walcott's floated free-kick, was his first since 23 November.

"We believe in ourselves and we are determined to look back on this season at the end and think we have given our best," said manager Arsène Wenger, whose side are seeking their first trophy since the 2005 FA Cup. "I hope it will be enough but it's a long way to go – it's too early to say."

Two points adrift of Arsenal are Chelsea FC, 2-1 victors over Liverpool FC at Stamford Bridge. Though Martin Škrtel put the visitors in front after just three minutes, Chelsea had the lead by the interval. Eden Hazard started and finished – with a splendid curling effort – a slick move to draw the Blues level, before Samuel Eto'o bundled in Oscar's cutback to earn José Mourinho's side maximum points.

The Reds drop to fifth, a point adrift of Merseyside rivals Everton FC, following their 2-1 win against Southampton FC. The Toffees, unexpectedly defeated at home by Sunderland AFC on Boxing Day, prevailed thanks to Romelu Lukaku's first goal in six league appearances.

In the day's other game, Tottenham Hotspur FC moved up to seventh thanks to a 3-0 triumph over Stoke City FC.
