Nine-man Atlético draw blank at Getafe

Club Atlético de Madrid lost Mario Suárez and Diego Godín to red cards in a 0-0 draw with Getafe CF, on a day when Valencia CF maintained their UEFA Champions League aspirations.

Nine-man Club Atlético de Madrid lost ground to Real Madrid CF in the race for second spot in the Liga as they played out a goalless draw at Getafe CF.

Diego Simeone's side slipped behind Madrid as FC Barcelona's nearest challengers due to a run of just one victory in four league games before Sunday, and they were unable to improve their fortunes against Getafe. Gabi and Falcao were denied by Jordi Codina in the home goal as the visitors looked to pounce before the break, while Thibaut Courtois was forced to do the same from Ángel Lafita at the other end.

Falcao and substitute Cristian Rodríguez went close again for Atlético after the restart, but they were put on the back foot by red cards for Mario Suárez and Diego Godín. Abdelaziz Barrada sent a free-kick just wide for Getafe as the visitors held on to find themselves three points behind Madrid, with eight games left to play.

Valencia CF kept their UEFA Champions League hopes alive as they moved to within two points of fourth-placed Real Sociedad de Fútbol by edging Real Valladolid CF 2-1. Mikel Balenziaga's own goal put Los Che ahead in the first half and Jonas headed in a 93rd-minute winner, after Óscar González appeared to have earned a point for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Rayo Vallecano de Madrid emerged 2-0 winners at RC Celta de Vigo to leave the home team three points adrift of safety, while Héctor Moreno and Wakaso Mubarak struck second-half goals as RCD Espanyol prevailed by the same scoreline at CA Osasuna.
