FC Barcelona maintained their 13-point lead at the Liga summit with a 3-0 win at struggling Real Zaragoza, before Real Madrid CF responded with a victory by the same margin at Athletic Club.
Thiago Alcántara opened the scoring for UEFA Champions League semi-finalists Barcelona on 20 minutes and Cristian Tello doubled their advantage six minutes ahead of the break. Tello grabbed his second of the game shortly after the restart as the Catalan club preserved their healthy advantage at the head of the class, with Zaragoza down in 18th.
José Mourinho's Madrid matched that performance against Athletic thanks to a double from Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal forward fired in a free-kick after just two minutes and powered a header past Gorka Iraizoz midway through the second period. Substitute Gonzalo Higuaín drilled in the third to help prevent the Merengues losing further ground on the leaders.
Elsewhere, Club Atlético de Madrid were the day's biggest winners, with Falcao scoring twice to take his tally for the season to 24 in an emphatic 5-0 victory against Granda CF. The capital club remain three points behind city rivals Madrid in third.
In fourth, meanwhile, Real Sociedad de Fútbol's impressive campaign continued with a 2-0 win at Rayo Vallecano de Madrid. Imanol Agirretxe grabbed his eighth and ninth goals of the campaign in the opening 14 minutes as Sociedad clinched a sixth away win of the season.
