Girard takes over the reins at Lille

LOSC Lille have moved quickly to replace Rudi Garcia after he departed for AS Roma by recruiting former Montpellier Hérault SC coach René Girard to the Grand Stade Lille Métropole helm.

LOSC Lille have confirmed that René Girard will take over as coach after Rudi Garcia left for AS Roma.

Former France midfielder Girard, 59, brought Montpellier their lone title in the 2011/12 season but has moved to LOSC after four seasons at the Stade de la Mosson. "Since I got the reins in 2002, LOSC have only had two coaches [Claude Puel and Garcia]," said president Michel Seydoux. "I'm convinced René Girard will ensure a bright future for the club, with the same dedication and success as his two predecessors.

"I knew him as a coach and for his achievements. I met a great, passionate and hard-working man. I am proud and happy that René has joined our club," added Seydoux. Garcia guided Lille to Coupe de France success and their first Ligue 1 championship in 57 years in 2011 and a sixth-placed finish last term.
