Bayer 04 Leverkusen missed out on the chance to move third in the Bundesliga after VfL Wolfsburg claimed a first home win of the season to leave Sascha Lewandowski's men fifth.
Undefeated in the league in their last seven, Leverkusen had the chance to move above Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, but their hopes faded after a disastrous first half. Diego curled in a free-kick with four minutes on the clock, and the Brazilian fired in a second from close range shortly after. Bas Dost then turned in Marcel Schäfer's cross after 33 minutes and, despite Stefan Kiessling's seventh goal of the campaign in second-half added time, Wolfsburg sealed a 3-1 win.
VfB Stuttgart surrendered a two-goal lead to go down 4-2 at home to Hannover 96. The hosts were cruising at the break through Christian Gentner and a Vedad Ibišević penalty, but Artur Sobiech struck back for Hannover before Jan Schlaudraff's penalty levelled the game in the 65th minute. Mohammed Abdellaoue completed the turnaround with a pair of goals, his second from the spot, to lift Hannover up to sixth.
As for VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, they fell behind twice but fought back to defeat nine-man SpVgg Greuther Fürth 4-2. After Martin Stranzl had restored parity for a second time, Patrick Herrmann headed in Lukas Rupp's cross on 57 minutes and Thorben Marx converted an added-time penalty to leave the hosts second from bottom.
