Born on the island of Chios, Giorgos Sarris earned his degree at the Medical School of Athens, and he has been practicing pathology since 1995. From an early age, he showed a keen interest in public service. He was elected a member and - later - the president of the Municipal Council of Ionia town, in Chios.
He played football as a defensive midfielder in the amateur divisions of Chios. In 1999, he was elected to the board of the local Chios football association, becoming their president in 2001. In 2008, he was elected to the board of the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO), assuming the presidency of the Amateur Division Championship (D’ Ethniki). He also served as president of the association’s Central Refereeing Committee. On 6 October 2012, he was elected as the new president of EPO.
Giorgos Sarris believes that “football boundaries go beyond the game itself. Football can educate the new generations, make them sociable. Football teaches respect, perseverance, esteem, how to win, how to lose. It can be a beacon of life values”.
