Hungarian double winners Debreceni VSC were denied a clean sweep of national titles as they lost 5-3 on penalties to Videoton FC following a 1-1 draw in the Hungarian Super Cup.
József Varga and László Rezes set up Ádám Bódi to give Debrecen a third-minutes lead. They had a second goal ruled out after the break before 20-year-old midfielder István Kovács pounced 18 minutes from the end for Videoton, tidying up after goalkeeper Nenad Novaković failed to hold a Sándor Torghelle effort.
In the resulting shoot-out, the first seven penalties were converted before Bódi hit his over the bar. That allowed centre-half Marco Caneira to win the day for Videoton.
The club’s Portuguese coach Paulo Sousa said: "It's always good to begin a season with a victory, and it is a particularly good feeling if it comes against the toughest opponents possible."
Goalscorer Kovács added: "I'm delighted to have scored my first competitive goal for Videoton. This success will give us a foundation for our season. We will have a great tussle with Debrecen for the title. I believe that we have more strength in depth, but it is up to the technical staff to find the right starting XI for each match."
