AC Milan moved to within a point of the Serie A summit after completing a 2-0 victory against Atalanta BC, while leaders Juventus were held to a surprise draw after conceding a late equaliser by US Lecce's Andrea Bertolacci.
Juventus began the evening knowing a home win against relegation-threatened Lecce would secure them their 28th Scudetto in the event that Milan lost against Atalanta. La Vecchia Signora were poised to fulfil their side of the bargain when holding a lead provided by Claudio Marchisio's early header and seeing the visitors reduced in numbers by Juan Guillermo Cuadrado's 54th-minute red card. However, the visitors silenced the sell-out Juventus Stadium when substitute Bertolacci struck five minutes from time.
Milan took full advantage of Juve's stumble by winning at home against Atalanta. Sulley Muntari calmed early nerves with a ninth-minute effort and Robinho ensured victory in added time. The defending champions now lie just a point behind the Bianconeri with two matches left.
Udinese Calcio are level with third-placed SSC Napoli after Diego Fabbrini's fourth-minute goal sunk AC Cesena, whose forward Adrian Mutu missed a penalty. S.S. Lazio, however, are two points back after a 1-1 draw with AC Siena, while FC Internazionale Milano's UEFA Champions league prospects suffered a blow with a 3-1 reverse at Parma FC. Elsewhere, there were narrow wins for Bologna FC and Genoa CFC, while ACF Fiorentina drew 2-2 with Novara Calcio.
