ACF Fiorentina have parted company with coach Delio Rossi after an altercation between the 51-year-old and forward Adem Ljajić during Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Novara Calcio.
"We decided to take the decision because his gesture was too serious," honorary club president Andrea Della Valle said. "Maybe he was provoked and he was very stressed but what he did is really too serious not to act promptly. We talked to him after the game and he is very sorry. I think the decision to part company with Rossi now is the best for us and for him."
Rossi took off Ljajić on 32 minutes with the Viola 2-0 down. The forward sarcastically applauded the decision and the coach, appointed in November as Siniša Mihajlović's successor, reacted in the dugout. Fiorentina went on to draw and need a point from their last two games of the season to avoid relegation. Former player Vincenzo Guerini, 58, will take the reins until the end of the campaign.
