FC Internazionale Milano were unable to keep pace with Juventus at the top of the standings after slipping to a 3-2 loss at Atalanta BC, on a day when S.S. Lazio edged AS Roma 3-2 to keep five points clear of their derby neighbours.
Juventus swept aside Pescara 6-1 on Saturday to put the pressure on Inter, and their rivals travelled to Bergamo looking to move back within a point via an eighth consecutive league win. They found themselves trailing after just nine minutes, however, as Giacomo Bonaventura put the hosts in front.
Fredy Guarín equalised on 56 minutes, but Germán Denis struck twice shortly afterwards, his second a penalty, to put Atalanta back in front. Rodrigo Palacio reduced the lead and the home side lost Facundo Parra to a late red card, but Inter were unable to salvage a point.
In the Rome derby, Erik Lamela headed Zdeněk Zeman's men ahead after nine minutes, before goals from Antonio Candreva and Miroslav Klose – plus a Daniele De Rossi red card – swung things in Lazio's favour ahead of the interval.
Stefano Mauri's right-footed effort on 46 minutes then stretched the lead, and the fifth-placed Biancocelesti held on for a first league win in four games after Mauri was dismissed late on and Miralem Pjanić's free-kick reduced the deficit.
Elsewhere, Marek Hamšík and Lorenzo Insigne scored in the closing moments for SSC Napoli as they earned a 4-2 win at Genoa CFC to stay third. They lie two points ahead of ACF Fiorentina, who secured a 3-1 success at AC Milan.
A Paulo Dybala double meant US Città di Palermo condemned UC Sampdoria to a seventh straight league loss, while Gabriele Angella's second of the game came in added time to earn ten-man Udinese Calcio a 2-2 draw at AC Chievo Verona. Lastly, Torino FC overcame Bologna FC 1-0, and the match between Parma FC and AC Siena ended goalless.
