Solskjær departs United to return to Molde

Ole Gunnar Solskjær said he had "followed advice from Sir Alex Ferguson" after leaving Manchester United FC to become head coach at Norwegian Premier Division side Molde FK.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has brought the curtain down on his 14-year affiliation with Manchester United FC in order to return to Molde FK as head coach.

Solskjær, scorer of 91 Premier League goals and winner of six English top-flight crowns from 1996 to 2007, became a coach at Old Trafford after being forced to end his playing days due to a series of knee injuries. He will relinquish that role in the new year and return to Molde, where he found the net 31 times in 42 games during the first two seasons of his professional career.

"I'm really looking forward to this. I've always said I would move home eventually, and this was the right time for me and my family," said Solskjær, whose new side finished 11th when the Norwegian Premier Division concluded on Sunday. "I followed advice from Sir Alex Ferguson when I chose to say 'yes' to Molde. He said that I had to choose a club with an owner and people around me that I could trust."

The 37-year-old, who takes Richard Hartis and Mark Dempsey as his assistants, famously came off the bench to score the winner in United's dramatic victory against FC Bayern München in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final. He scored 23 goals in 67 Norway appearances.
