Jesus commits to two more years with Benfica

With his contract expiring later this month, SL Benfica coach Jorge Jesus has accepted a new two-year deal to continue at the helm of the beaten UEFA Europa League finalists.

Jorge Jesus has signed a new two-year contract to continue as coach of 2013 UEFA Europa League runners-up SL Benfica.

The 58-year-old, whose previous deal was due to expire at the end of this month, is now committed to the Lisbon club until June 2015. Jesus succeeded Quique Sánchez Flores at the helm in summer 2009 and enjoyed immediate success, leading the Eagles to the Liga title and Portuguese League Cup – the first of three successive triumphs in the latter competition – in his first season.

Jesus and Benfica looked set for another league championship this term, but their four-point lead evaporated in the last three games of the campaign after they drew at home to GD Estoril Praia and then lost 2-1 at rivals FC Porto.

Jesus's men also succumbed by the same scoreline to Chelsea FC and Vitória SC in the UEFA Europa League and Portuguese Cup finals respectively.

Following their second-placed Liga finish, Benfica will enter the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League at the group stage, with particular incentive to do well – the final will be played at their Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica next May.
