Karpin back as permanent coach of Spartak

FC Spartak Moskva caretaker coach Valeri Karpin has signed a one-and-a-half-year contract to take the reins on a permanent basis after Unai Emery's November exit.

FC Spartak Moskva caretaker coach Valeri Karpin has put pen to paper on a one-and-a-half-year deal to take up the role on a permanent basis following Unai Emery's dismissal on 25 November.

The 43-year-old had been in temporary charge for three games but could not prevent the Russian club's elimination from Europe following their fourth-place finish in UEFA Champions League Group G.

"The task is set for the coach to win one of the three following trophies during his spell: the league title, the Russian Cup or a UEFA club competition," said Spartak president Leonid Fedun in a statement on their website. "Karpin also leaves his position as the club's general director, which he has occupied for four years. His successor will be Roman Askhabadze."

Karpin, who won one match and lost two during his interim reign, was previously at the helm between April 2009 and May 2012, securing two second-place finishes in the Premier-Liga. Spartak go into the winter break sixth in the Russian top flight, 11 points behind leaders PFC CSKA Moskva.
