FC Basel 1893 have taken the Swiss title for a fourth time in as many seasons after a 1-0 victory against FC St Gallen in the final game of the season.
Murat Yakin's team began the day three points clear of closest pursuers Grasshopper Club and rubber-stamped that advantage thanks to Raúl Bobadilla's winner. Grasshopper, meanwhile, dispatched FC Lausanne-Sport 4-1 but their resounding victory proved in vain.
"What can I say? It's fantastic. I'm so pleased for everyone," said Basel coach Yakin, whose players have balanced their UEFA Europa League exploits with domestic duties to become the first team since BSC Young Boys in 1960 to claim four consecutive league crowns.
The former Basel captain took up the reins from Heiko Vogel last October, and swiftly set about overturning a 12-point deficit, much to the delight of chairman Bernhard Heusler, who said: "It's been a difficult year, one in which we've had to really stick together. At the end of it all, it's clear that we made the right decision.”
