Alaba tops Austrian player of the year poll

FC Bayern München midfielder David Alaba is celebrating being named the youngest ever Austrian footballer of the year after being chosen by the ten coaches of Austria's top-flight clubs.

FC Bayern München midfielder David Alaba has become the youngest ever Austrian footballer of the year after being chosen by the ten coaches of the Austrian Bundesliga clubs.

The 19-year-old picked up 21 points in the vote for players either of Austrian nationality or who ply their trade in the country's top flight, just edging out FK Austria Wien's Dutch forward Nacer Barazite, who collected 20 points. Martin Harnik of VfB Stuttgart finished third on 13 points.

"This is a huge honour for me," explained Alaba, who has won 16 Austria caps since making his international debut in 2009. "I didn't expect this at all. I want to thank everyone who voted for me, my family, my friends and God."

"This is a great award for this young, extraordinarily talented player," added Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes, Alaba having scored twice in 15 Bundesliga appearances this term after spending the second half of last season on loan at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. "I am very happy for David. He's a player who tries to improve in training every day. This award will give him a boost to take the next steps in his career."
