FK Austria Wien have dismissed coach Karl Daxbacher in the wake of their elimination from the UEFA Europa League, with former Austrian international Ivica Vastić coming in as his successor.
Daxbacher, 59, represented Austria Wien as a midfielder from 1971 to 1985, and after taking over as coach in 2008, won the 2009 Austrian Cup. A poor run of recent results in the Bundesliga coupled with elimination at the end of the UEFA Europa League group stage prompted the club to take action. "After a long and intense discussion, the board came to this unanimous conclusion," said Thomas Parits, chairman of the club's board. "Bad results in the league were decisive, with just one win in the last nine matches."
New coach Vastić has been in charge of the Austria Wien reserve team since last year. The 42-year-old won two national titles and four Austrian Cups as a player with SK Sturm Graz, and was capped 50 times for his country. Austria Wien lie fourth in Austrian Bundesliga, four points adrift of rivals SK Rapid Wien.
