FC İnter Bakı have usurped FK Olimpik Bakı at the top of the Yuksek Liga to claim their first league title on a dramatic last day of the season in Azerbaijan.
İnter Bakı were three points adrift of leaders Olimpik at the start of play, but Olimpik's 1-0 home defeat by FK Qarabağ coupled with İnter Bakı's 4-0 victory against FK Qäbälä, ensured a maiden title by virtue of a greater number of victories over the course of the 26-game season. Olimpik needed just a draw against Qarabağ and were within ten minutes of their achieving their objective until Zaur Gashimov struck a late winner.
FC ABN Bärdä and FK Gänclärbirliyi Sumgayit, meanwhile, have been relegated. ABN failed to fulfil their away fixture at third-placed PFC Neftçi, who were awarded the three points, while Gänclärbirliyi lost 3-2 at FK Standart Bakı to fall three points short of safety. Defending champions FK Khazar Länkäran ended the season with a 1-1 draw against mid-table Simurq PFC to finish fourth. FK Bakili and FK MOIK will feature in the top-flight next term following their promotions from the second tier.
