FK Bakı made sure of their second Azerbaijani title courtesy of a 4-0 triumph over FK Muğan Salyan on the final day of the Premyer Liqasi season, with last year's champions FC İnter Bakı finishing a solitary point further back.
Bakı failed to conjure an early goal against their visitors but eventually went ahead courtesy of William Batista after 37 minutes, before Giorgi Adamia beat three defenders and doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time. Those goals set up a comfortable second half for the hosts and they consolidated their lead through Ahmed Tidjani, the Nigerian forward striking twice in the last five minutes. Meanwhile, runners-up İnter Bakı also posted a four-goal win, but their 5-1 success at FK Bakili proved scant consolation as they bade farewell to their crown.
"First of all, I want to thank our main opponents İnter for being in contention throughout the season," said Bakı coach Gjokica Hadžievski, appointed a year after their maiden win in 2005/06. "It was interesting to compete with them." Club president Khafiz Mamedov added: "The most intriguing part is that the race for gold was running right until the very last game. We prevailed in the end, but, as I've always said, our main goal is to succeed in Europe. You will see a different FK Bakı in the UEFA Champions League." The capital outfit will enter the second qualifying round of Europe's premier club competition.
İnter can look forward to the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, meanwhile, as can third-placed Simurq PFC. At the opposite end of the table, Bakili and FK MOIK have both been relegated.
