FK Qarabağ have won the opportunity to play in the inaugural UEFA Europa League next season after they defeated FC İnter Bakı 1-0 to claim the Azerbaijani Cup.
Penalty winner
Qarabağ finished fifth in the Premyer Liqasi and needed a win to compete in Europe next term, but they nearly conceded after eleven minutes, breathing a sigh of relief when Walter Guglielmone misjudged a pass to Petar Zlatinov and a defender was able to block the midfielder's strike on goal. The second half was a different story, however, and Qarabağ took the lead in the 57th minute when Elnur Allahverdiyev was fouled by Samir Abbasov in the area, allowing 19-year-old Vaqif Cavadov to hit the winner from the penalty spot.
Promise kept
Defeat for league runners-up İnter meant they have now lost three cup finals in the last five seasons, while for the victors this represented their third cup triumph and a route into the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round. "Before the match I promised that we would win and I kept my word," said Qarabağ midfielder Zaur Ramazanov.
