Genk edge Standard to win first Super Cup

KRC Genk claimed their first Belgian Super Cup after a 1-0 win against R. Standard de Liège, with midfielder Kevin De Bruyne concluding: "It's always good to win a trophy."

Champions KRC Genk clung on to win the Belgian Super Cup, beating R. Standard de Liège 1-0 despite being reduced to ten men in the first half.

As Belgium celebrated the 180th anniversary of its foundation, it looked as though Genk would have a day to forget at the Roi Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, following Jelle Vossen's dismissal after half an hour. However, Hungarian midfielder Dániel Tőzsér curled a free-kick into the top right corner in the dying seconds of the opening period, and Frank Vercauteren's men clung on to win their first Super Cup at the sixth attempt.

"It's always good to win a trophy," said midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, with Genk's focus now turning to next week's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round opener against FK Partizan. "This victory is good for our self-confidence looking ahead to Tuesday's match. Our performance was not too bad, although we have not played many games this season. Sometimes things did not work out too well, but that is normal."
