Minsk lift maiden Belarusian Cup

FC Minsk are celebrating their first ever Belarusian Cup win after overcoming local rivals FC Dinamo Minsk 4-1 on penalties at the end of a nervy 1-1 draw in Zhodino.

FC Minsk claimed their first ever Belarusian Cup by beating FC Dinamo Minsk 4-1 on penalties after the two sides traded goals in normal time and finished 1-1 after 120 minutes of play.

The town of Zhodino hosted the final for the first time as Dinamo Stadion in Minsk – venue for 19 of the 21 previous cup deciders since independence – is currently closed for renovations. Despite their status as underdogs, Minsk were more dangerous from the start and Dinamo had to clear the ball off the line after just nine minutes following a mistake by goalkeeper Aleksandr Gutor.

Centre-back Sergei Sosnovski then rose to head the ball home from close range following a corner on 31 minutes. However, Minsk's joy was short-lived as Uruguayan midfielder Hernán Figueredo promptly levelled the scores from the spot.

The second half was a tenser affair that yielded few scoring chances, while both teams squandered great opportunities in extra time. Everything therefore came down to penalties, and Minsk were unstoppable as they converted all the four spot kicks. In contrast, Figueredo missed for Dinamo before Minsk goalkeeper Vladimir Bushma saved from Artem Bykov to spark celebrations, a year after Vadim Skripchenko's men lost their first final on penalties against FC Naftan Novopolotsk.

Minsk coach Vadim Skripchenko said: "We all are humans and we have to make most of this night [and to celebrate it well]. However I would like to have collected more points in the league."

Midfielder Nikita Bukatkin added: "We did not train for penalties. What for? One thing is to perform them in training when there is no tension, and you cannot compare that to the situation in such an important match. Our legs were fresh, our heads were working all right. We have to thank our coaches to have prepared us well. I could have played for two more hours."
