APOEL FC have wrapped up their 22nd Cypriot title after closest rivals Anorthosis Famagusta FC suffered a 4-0 loss to AC Omonia on Sunday.
Ivan Jovanović's side had hoped to clinch the championship on Saturday when they faced AEK Larnaca FC in their end-of-season playoff encounter, but AEK's Alex spoiled the party on 78 minutes with a brilliant drive from distance to secure the visitors a 1-0 victory.
That left Anorthosis in with a slim chance of denying the leaders as long as they won their three remaining games, yet the challengers were easily swept aside by Omonia, who leapfrogged their opponents into second spot in the process.
For Jovanović, the title win represents his fourth with APOEL following triumphs in 2004, 2009 and 2011, and the Serbian coach will enter UEFA Champions League qualifying with enthusiasm next term after memorably steering his charges to the quarter-finals last season. Anorthosis, AEK and Omonia will now battle it out in their two remaining games in a bid to clinch the two UEFA Europa League berths on offer.
