Apollon win cup final derby in Cyprus

Extra-time goals from Horacio Cardozo and Romeo Surdu propelled Apollon Limassol FC towards a 2-1 win against neighbours AEL Limassol FC in Wednesday's Cypriot Cup final.

Apollon Limassol FC clinched their seventh Cypriot Cup on Wednesday after beating cross-town rivals AEL Limassol FC 2-1 in a thrilling encounter that was decided in extra-time.

A goal from substitute Horacio Cardozo and a late penalty from Romeo Surdu saw Apollon prevail at the Tsirion Stadium in the neigbours' first cup final meeting since 1987. Ivorian striker Patrick Vouho scored a late consolation goal for AEL but it was too little, too late for Jorge Costa's men.

Christakis Christoforou's Apollon were the more dangerous side throughout, with Fotios Papoulis twice forcing AEL keeper Matias Degra into good saves in the first half. However, AEL squandered a superb opportunity to steal victory five minutes from the end of normal time. Rachid Hamdani pulled down Esteban Sachetti in the area, but Bruno Vale saved Vouho's penalty. Apollon then missed a gilt-edged chance of their own on 90 minutes, Romanian forward Surdu failing to turn in the rebound after Papoulis's shot crashed off the bar.

They made amends early in extra time. Minutes after coming on, Argentinian midfielder Cardozo's long-range shot beat Degra, with the help of a deflection off Edwin Ouon. AEL responded, with Dosa Júnior's ambitious scissor kick and Michalis Konstantinou's header both drawing good saves from Vale, but Surdu put the contest beyond doubt when he tucked away a penalty on 118 minutes following Ouon's challenge on Greek midfielder Papoulis. Vouho's response came deep into added time.
