Villa close in on top four

Published: Tuesday 16 March 2010, 23.57CET
Aston Villa FC remain in contention for a UEFA Champions League place after a 2-1 win at Premier League strugglers Wigan Athletic FC. A James McCarthy own goal on 25 minutes put Villa ahead but Gary Caldwell swiftly equalised. However, James Milner's 63rd-minute strike from outside the box after an Ashley Young corner was only half-cleared ensured seventh-placed Villa moved to within three points of Tottenham Hotspur FC in fourth, with a game in hand. Wigan remain four points above the relegation zone.
