Birmingham fifth after Liverpool stalemate

UEFA Europa League contenders Liverpool FC had Pepe Reina to thank for a goalless draw at Birmingham City FC, a result which lifted the hosts to fifth in the Premier League.

Birmingham City FC climbed to fifth in the Premier League with a 0-0 draw against Liverpool FC but will be ruing their failure to pick up maximum points against the UEFA Europa League contenders.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina frustrated Alex McLeish's side with a number of fine saves, denying Cameron Jerome and Craig Gardner in particular. Centre-back Scott Dann spurned perhaps the best chance for the hosts when he headed over from close range. Birmingham nevertheless remain unbeaten for the season while Liverpool are 13th as they prepare to begin their UEFA Europa League Group K campaign against FC Steaua Bucureşti at Anfield on Thursday.
