Sunderland AFC kept themselves seventh in the Premier League with a 1-0 success against West Ham United FC that dropped the visitors down to last place in the standings, after West Bromwich Albion FC had earlier seen off Newcastle United FC 3-1.
Without a win since their 3-0 victory at Chelsea FC on 14 November, Sunderland took the lead on 34 minutes when Jordan Henderson applied the finish to an excellent pass from Asamoah Gyan. Almost immediately, Gyan struck the woodwork courtesy of a delightful chip, with Victor Obinna subsequently rattling a post for West Ham towards the end.
The victory hauled Sunderland back above West Bromwich Albion following their result against fellow promoted side Newcastle. Somen Tchoyi had put the hosts ahead via a curled effort just after the half-hour and Peter Odemwingie made sure of the points with a pair of strikes in the final 19 minutes, before an added-time consolation for the visitors from Peter Løvenkrands.
