Manchester City FC are second in the Premier League following a 3-1 win at West Ham United FC on a day when Aston Villa FC beat local rivals West Bromwich Albion FC.
Yaya Touré gave Roberto Mancini's side the lead with an emphatic finish on the half-hour and subsequently played a key role in their second on 73 minutes, hitting a shot which struck a post and deflected in off West Ham keeper Robert Green. Victory was rubber-stamped by Adam Johnson, who rounded Green and finished with aplomb. James Tomkins added a late consolation.
Villa, meanwhile, triumphed 2-1 against West Brom to end a run of three straight defeats in the league. Stewart Downing opened the scoring on 25 minutes and Emile Heskey added a second with his head (80) before Paul Scharner halved the deficit in the final minute.
Stoke City FC are without a win in three matches following a 1-0 loss against Blackpool FC, DJ Campbell turning in Charlie Adam's cross just after half-time. The promoted club are now up to tenth, a place behind Liverpool FC, who lost 3-1 at Newcastle FC in Alan Pardew's first game in charge.
Everton FC versus Wigan Athletic FC and Fulham FC against Sunderland AFC both ended goalless.
