Two Dimitar Berbatov goals ensured Manchester United FC maintained their two-point Premier League lead as England's busy holiday programme began.
Berbatov put United ahead against Sunderland AFC with a fifth-minute header from Wayne Rooney's cross and scored again on 57 minutes following Anderson's clever flick. Carlos Tévez also struck twice as Manchester City FC moved into second with a 3-1 victory at Newcastle United FC. However, Arsenal FC will go back ahead of City on goal difference with victory on Monday against Chelsea FC.
Tottenham Hotspur FC remain fifth after a 2-1 win at Aston Villa FC courtesy of two Rafael van der Vaart goals despite Jermain Defoe's sending-off, just ahead of Bolton Wanderers FC following their 2-0 defeat of West Bromwich Albion FC. Stoke City FC won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers FC to go eighth.
West Ham United FC are off the bottom after their first away win of the season, 3-1 at Fulham FC. In their place are Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, beaten 2-1 by Wigan Athletic FC, out of the relegation zone at Fulham's expense.
Liverpool FC's trip to Blackpool FC and Everton's match with Birmingham City FC were postponed. There is a further full programme on Tuesday and Wednesday.
