Chelsea FC hauled themselves ahead of Manchester City FC into third spot in the Premier League after a pair of late goals gave them a 2-0 victory against Roberto Mancini's men at Stamford Bridge
City adopted a cautious approach in west London and were able to frustrate their hosts until January signing David Luiz notched his second goal for the Blues on 78 minutes. The Brazilian centre-back won a free-kick and promptly nodded in firmly from Didier Drogba's set piece, with Ramires then wrapping up the result thanks to a superb individual effort two minutes into added time. Chelsea remain nine points behind leaders Manchester United FC with a game in hand, while City stand four points clear of Tottenham Hotspur FC having contested one game more.
Also on Sunday, Liverpool FC moved to within four points of Tottenham and a UEFA Europa League berth by prevailing 2-0 at Sunderland AFC. Kenny Dalglish's side went ahead via a Dirk Kuyt penalty on 33 minutes, John Mensah having fouled Jay Spearing, and they made sure of the outcome when Luis Suárez buried a shot from a tight angle 13 minutes from time. Mensah was later sent off for fouling the Uruguayan international.
