Andy Carroll scored his first goals for Liverpool FC as Kenny Dalglish's men kept their hopes of a top-four finish alive with an emphatic 3-0 win against Manchester City FC.
City started the evening 11 points ahead of their opponents in fourth – the final place offering a UEFA Champions League qualifying berth – but Roberto Mancini's men never looked like claiming a victory that would have moved them above Chelsea FC.
City lost Carlos Tévez to injury after 16 minutes and Liverpool burst into a three-goal lead before the interval, inspired by two goals from their €40.25m January signing Carroll.
The 22-year-old drilled in the 13th-minute opener from 25 metres then rose majestically to head in number three a minute after Dirk Kuyt (34) had coolly slid in the hosts' second. The Anfield club remain sixth, five points behind Tottenham Hotspur FC having played a game more.
