Chelsea FC bounced back from their UEFA Champions League exit with a 3-1 win at West Bromwich Albion FC that moved them within a point of second-placed Arsenal FC, who host Liverpool FC on Sunday.
Peter Odemwingie's 12th goal of the season had given West Brom the lead, but Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou and Frank Lampard responded before the break to secure maximum points for the visitors. Carlo Ancelotti's side now lie eight points off leaders Manchester United FC, who ended their European dreams in midweek.
Gabriel Agbonlahor's added-time winner gave Aston Villa FC a crucial 2-1 success away against West Ham United FC, who dropped to 19th as a result. Wigan Athletic FC prevailed 3-1 at Blackpool FC, meanwhile, their third away victory of the season moving them out of the bottom three.
Elsewhere, Birmingham City FC put distance between themselves and the drop zone with a 2-0 victory against Sunderland AFC, their goals coming from Sebastian Larsson and Craig Gardner. Seventh-placed Everton FC triumphed 2-0 at home against relegation-threatened Blackburn Rovers FC to enhance their chances of a UEFA Europa League spot.
