Arsenal FC's disappointing start to their league campaign went from bad to worse as they suffered a 2-0 home defeat by Liverpool FC.
Reduced to ten men following the second-half dismissal of Emmanuel Frimpong, the Gunners conceded an Aaron Ramsey own goal (78) and a late Luis Suárez strike. It was the first time Arsenal − who on Wednesday defend a 1-0 UEFA Champions League play-off lead against Udinese Calcio − have failed to score in their opening two top-flight matches for 42 years.
There was a happier home showing for Chelsea FC, who completed a 2-1 comeback victory against West Bromwich Albion FC. Second-half strikes by Nicolas Anelka (53) and substitute Florent Malouda (83) prevented Shane Long's early opener from deciding the contest in favour of a club that has lost its last 15 top-flight encounters with the Blues.
Elsewhere, Darren Bent was among the scorers as Aston Villa FC defeated Blackburn Rovers FC 3-1, Newcastle United FC triumphed in the Wear-Tyne derby, edging out Sunderland AFC with a Ryan Taylor goal (62), and promoted Queens Park Rangers FC won by the same scoreline at Everton FC. Manchester United FC host Tottenham Hotspur FC on Monday.
