Manchester City FC and Chelsea FC were among four Premier League clubs to book their place in the English League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Fresh from their 6-1 derby win against Manchester United FC, City made it 11 goals in two games with a 5-2 defeat of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC at Molineux.
Nenad Milijaš (18) fired in from close range to give Wolves the lead but Adam Johnson (37) restored parity for the UEFA Champions League hopefuls, before Samir Nasri and Edin Džeko swiftly took the tie away from the hosts. After the break, goalkeeper Dorus de Vries deflected the fourth into his own net and Džeko added his second before Jamie O'Hara struck a consolation.
Chelsea, meanwhile, triumphed 2-1 at Everton FC thanks to a Daniel Sturridge goal four minutes from the end of extra time. The Londoners played much of the second half with ten men, goalkeeper Ross Turnbull having been sent off for conceding a penalty, which Petr Čech then saved from Leighton Baines, after fouling Louis Saha.
UEFA Europa League contenders Stoke City FC were knocked out by Liverpool FC, Luis Suárez scoring both in a 2-1 away win, while Blackburn Rovers FC prevailed 4-3 against Newcastle United FC after extra time.
