Manchester City FC remain five points clear at the Premier League summit after completing a 3-1 victory — their 11th in 12 league matches — against third-placed Newcastle United FC.
Despite a strong defensive record, the visitors — previously unbeaten in the league — conceded two penalties which were converted by Mario Balotelli (41) and Sergio Agüero (72) either side of Micah Richards' strike (44).
City remain five points clear as Manchester United FC, in second, also triumphed, 1-0 at Swansea City AFC, Javier Hernández scoring the only goal of the game (11) to ensure the reigning champions kept their local rivals in check.
Earlier, Arsenal FC moved level on 22 points with fourth-placed Chelsea FC, who face Liverpool FC on Sunday, and Tottenham Hotspur FC, after their fifth consecutive league win. Robin van Persie's tenth goal in that sequence earned the Gunners a 2-1 success at Norwich City FC. There were also 2-1 victories for Everton FC and West Bromwich Albion FC, while Stoke City FC lost 3-2 at home against Queens Park Rangers FC. Wigan Athletic FC drew 3-3 against Blackburn Rovers FC and there were no goals between Sunderland AFC and Fulham FC.
