Newcastle United FC's six-game winning streak in the Premier League came to an end as Wigan Athletic FC did their survival hopes the power of good by inflicting a 4-0 defeat on Alan Pardew's side.
The Magpies, in fourth, were two down inside 15 minutes courtesy of Victor Moses' quick-fire double and four behind by half-time following efforts from Shaun Maloney and Franco Di Santo. Wigan are now three points clear of the drop zone after their fifth win in seven games.
The Lactics are level on points with Aston Villa FC after their goalless draw at West Bromwich Albion FC, while Bolton Wanderers FC remain in the relegation places despite a 2-2 draw with Sunderland AFC.
Arsenal FC and Newcastle were looking to put distance between themselves and Tottenham Hotspur FC and Chelsea FC, who are in action tomorrow, in the race for a top-four finish, but the Gunners also failed to win. Robin van Persie's 28th league goal of the season cancelled out Peter Crouch's opener as Arsène Wenger's men had to settle for a point.
Elsewhere, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, relegated last weekend, responded to conceding the fastest Premier League goal in six years, recovering from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 at Swansea City AFC. Nikica Jelavić continued his excellent form with two goals in Everton FC's 4-0 triumph over Fulham FC. In the day's late game, Luis Suárez scored his first Liverpool FC hat-trick as the Reds beat Norwich City FC 3-0.
