Manchester City FC rallied from a goal behind to earn a 2-1 victory at home to Tottenham Hotspur FC and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
The home side's vulnerability from set pieces proved their undoing in Tuesday's 2-2 UEFA Champions League draw with AFC Ajax and it took Spurs 21 minutes to exploit that weakness again. Tom Huddlestone's intelligent cross was met by defender Steven Caulker, whose powerful header squirmed through the hands of England goalkeeper Joe Hart.
City struggled to find their rhythm after the break and it took a moment of individual brilliance for them to draw level. Sergio Agüero provided it, slipping past Caulker and sliding in a sublime finish. With that breakthrough, Roberto Mancini's charges seized the initiative, and substitute Edin Džeko made no mistake from close range two minutes from time.
Chelsea FC dropped to third after surrendering a lead to draw 1-1 against Liverpool FC at Stamford Bridge. The home side were rewarded with the goal their early possession merited on 20 minutes when John Terry headed in Juan Mata's corner. Mata then blazed over after breezing through the visiting defence, before Brad Jones denied Fernando Torres at point-blank range. They were made to pay for their profligacy in the second half when Luis Suárez turned in Jamie Carragher's flick-on.
Meanwhile, West Ham United FC moved up to sixth after consigning Newcastle United FC to a 1-0 loss courtesy of Kevin Nolan's 39th-minute strike.
