Chelsea FC defeated West Ham United FC 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to leapfrog Tottenham Hotspur FC – who slumped to a 1-0 home defeat against London rivals Fulham FC – into third place in the Premier League.
The Blues, who enjoyed UEFA Europa League success in midweek, were rewarded for their early possession when Frank Lampard headed in Eden Hazard's pinpoint cross after 19 minutes to notch his 200th strike for the club. A relentless siege on the visitors' goal almost conjured a second ahead of the break, before Hazard lifted any lingering tension after the restart by taking receipt of Juan Mata's pass and finishing unerringly past Jussi Jääskeläinen.
Victory tasted even sweeter given that Tottenham had suffered a second straight Premier League defeat earlier in the day. Dimitar Berbatov came back to haunt his old club by turning in Sascha Riether's centre after 52 minutes to leave Spurs four points above fifth-placed Arsenal FC, who have a game in hand.
Elsewhere, third-from-bottom Wigan Athletic FC boosted their survival odds thanks to Arouna Koné's last-minute winner in a 2-1 home success against Newcastle United FC. Davide Santon cancelled out Jean Beausejour's 18th-minute opener to bring the visitors level, but Koné rifled in from close range as the seconds ticked down. As for Sunderland AFC, they could only draw 1-1 with Norwich City FC despite the dismissal of Norwich goalkeeper Mark Bunn after half an hour.
