Tottenham Hotspur FC staged a vibrant second-half fightback to defeat Manchester City FC 3-1 before Chelsea FC were held to a 2-2 draw at Liverpool FC.
City trimmed the gap on runaway leaders Manchester United FC to 13 points in midweek, but after today's result, Sir Alex Ferguson's team can clinch a record 20th English championship on Monday night by beating Aston Villa FC. The outlook was decidedly different when Carlos Tévez and James Milner combined to set up Samir Nasri for a fifth-minute opener at White Hart Lane.
However, the returning Gareth Bale made his mark 15 minutes from time, crossing for Clint Dempsey to tap in. Substitute Jermain Defoe swiftly made it two with a clinical finish and Bale completed a breathless seven-minute salvo by clipping the ball over Joe Hart.
That temporarily moved Spurs level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, who took the lead at Anfield when Oscar headed in Juan Mata's corner at the front post. Liverpool emerged rejuvenated after the break and former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge made the pressure tell having already hit the post.
Luis Suárez then handled inside the penalty area and Eden Hazard outwitted Pepe Reina with a nonchalant spot kick. More drama was to come, though, as Suárez headed in Sturridge's cross deep into added time.
