Premier League champions Manchester United FC secured a 1-1 draw at Arsenal FC after Chelsea FC downed Swansea City AFC 2-0 to move back into third.
Arsenal raced out the blocks against United and were rewarded for their early intent when Theo Walcott combined with Tomáš Rosický and swept past David de Gea. The Gunners continued to probe, yet their concentration wavered a minute before the break as Bacary Sagna tripped Robin van Persie inside the penalty area. The former Arsenal striker made no mistake from the spot, arrowing the ball beyond Wojciech Szczęsny.
There was little to choose between the teams in an evenly contested second half. Rosický flashed a shot narrowly wide before Wayne Rooney headed over from close range. A frantic finale then culminated in De Gea beating away Santi Cazorla's venomous 25-metre drive, while substitute Ryan Giggs had a goal-bound effort deflected past a post.
Earlier on Sunday, Frank Lampard closed to within one goal of becoming Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer. Oscar finished off a beautifully crafted move on the stroke of half-time before Lampard converted a penalty to end Swansea's resolve and lift Rafael Benítez's men above Arsenal, who are a point back in fourth having played one game more.
At the bottom, Reading FC and Queens Park Rangers FC were both relegated after contesting a goalless draw.
