Liverpool FC bounced back from last week's home loss against Southampton FC to beat Sunderland AFC 3-1 and climb into third in the Premier League, while Norwich City FC edged out Stoke City FC 1-0.
Propping up the table and without a win this season, there was no respite for Sunderland who fell behind after 28 minutes. Steven Gerrard's inswinging corner split the home defence and Daniel Sturridge bundled in at the back post for his fifth goal in six outings. Brendan Rodgers' team rubber-stamped their lead soon after, Luis Suárez marking his return to league action following suspension by turning Sturridge's centre into an empty net.
Sunderland's caretaker manager Kevin Ball rallied his troops at the break and they produced a spirited response. Simon Mignolet could only parry Lee Cattermole's low drive and Italy midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini snaffled the rebound. Their momentum was punctured a minute from time, though, as Suárez combined with Sturridge once more to score.
In Sunday's early kick-off, Norwich arrested a run of two consecutive defeats by coming out on top away to Stoke, Jonathan Howson's first-half effort proving decisive in the Midlands.
