Arsenal stay top, United held at home

Arsenal FC pounced on Liverpool FC's draw at Newcastle United FC to go two points clear in the Premier League, on a day when Chelsea FC also won but Manchester United FC were held.

Arsenal FC exploited Liverpool FC's draw at Newcastle United FC to go two points clear at the top of the Premier League, on a day when Chelsea FC also won but Manchester United FC were held at home.

Liverpool failed to clinch victory in the day's early game despite Newcastle being reduced to ten men late on in the first half when Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was dismissed. Steven Gerrard scored his 100th Premier League goal from the resulting penalty to equalise but they were later to need Daniel Sturridge to make it 2-2 to leave the door open for the Gunners to open a gap at the summit.

Mesut Özil then duly scored twice in Arsenal's 4-1 win against Norwich City FC. Chelsea are two points adrift after they came from behind to beat Cardiff City FC. Manchester United's slow start to the season continued at home to high-flying Southampton FC, who grabbed a point with Adam Lallana's 89th-minute equaliser.

Everton FC secured a narrow victory over Hull City AFC, Swansea City AFC put four past Sunderland AFC in Gus Poyet's first change in charge and there were no goals between Stoke City FC and West Bromwich Albion FC. In the day's late game, Manchester City FC clinched their first away win of the season largely thanks to two Sergio Agüero goals at West Ham United FC.
