Cardiff City AFC edged Swansea City AFC 1-0 in the Premier League's first south Wales derby after the game between Everton FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC finished goalless.
Malky Mackay's side, who had won just twice in the league beforehand, spent long periods of the first half on the back foot. They broke free from their defensive shackles after the break, though, and scored shortly after the hour. Craig Bellamy curled in a corner from the right that centre-back Steven Caulker, who spent the 2011/12 season on loan at Swansea, headed in at the front post.
Michael Laudrup's visitors were slow to regain their composure and knew the game was up in added time when goalkeeper Michel Vorm was sent off for bringing down Fraizer Campbell as the substitute burst through on goal. The result lifted Cardiff above their rivals into 12th.
Meanwhile, Tottenham reclaimed fourth spot following the day's early kick-off at Goodison Park. The visitors were quickest out of the blocks yet failed to make their first-half pressure count. Everton almost capitalised in a lively second period when Spanish winger Gerard Deulofeu danced through, only to have his lifted effort beaten away by Hugo Lloris.
